~ / Ha ~

/ Ḥa is the 8th letter in the Geez alphabet according to the order of Alef and Abegede; its name is Ḥawt or Ḥayt; its number is eight; when it is a numeral, it is called eighttu. But the Hebrews consider eight a category, and by adding a dot on top of it, they call it eight thousand. The sound of the three letters , , is different according to their form, but from Selama onwards, they are pronounced without distinction; this is due to negligence, laziness, and a lack of learning, but it is not the proper way. Because without a good teacher and a school for students, it is impossible to know the nature of the letter thoroughly in writing and pronunciation.

[2]: (ማእከላይ ስም) He who is called Eche Echege; coruler with the king; holder of the third part of the kingdom. Its mystery is the governor of the country, the chief priest; the head of monasteries and hermitages. Because Ethiopia, according to the law of Nicaea, having seen and examined its teachings and purity, its character and conduct, its upbringing, and having chosen and testified that it is worthy, did not appoint him, but others from their own people chose and appointed him; and because she preferred to live confessing and being governed by a foreign bishop from a foreign country, who did not know her language and whose language she did not know; secondly, because she hated to completely give her honor and throne to a foreigner, saying, May it be far from me; she called his outward name Melekaawi or like Basilios, Hatsege, but his inner name is Pope, Archbishop. When a bishop is absent, the Abun and Echege openly perform the work of a bishop; and even if there is a bishop, since he is a stranger to the country and an outsider to the people, like a dumb mouth and a broken horn, he cannot judge, criticize, preach, or teach, except to ordain priests and deacons presented to him; his authority and right over the people and priests, according to the Fetha Negest, always belongs to the Echege. “ወፈታሒሰ ውእቱ ሊቀ ካህናት፤ ወውእቱ ሊቀ ጳጳሰት፤አው ኤጲስቆጶስ፤ አው ዘአትለውዎ እሙንቱ ወረሰይዎ ህየንቴሆሙ በእንተ ፍትሕ።And he is the interpreter, the chief priest, and he is the archbishop, or bishop, or those whom they have appointed and established in their place for justice. “ይኩን ድኁነ ልሳን ወዘየአምር ነገረ ልሳን እንተ ኢትትከሀል፤ ልሳነ ሰብአ ሢመቱ በዘይትናገሩ በበይናቲሆሙLet him be slow of speech and know the language that cannot be understood; the language of the people, his ordination is by oil, and they speak among themselves (: : ፵፫). When they interpret betsigena betsiga, and wemesmakase lemenegistekumu wiitu Kristos (and the support of your kingdom is Christ), as it says in the Qerlos, it signifies a support and a foundation; this name shows the connection, union, combination, and coordination of Echegenet and episcopacy. This is known by the fact that the Abun sits on the right and the Echege on the left, advising the king like the right and left supports; but when the Abun is absent, the right side belongs to the Echege. It is said that Echegenet began in the year 1263 (1253 Ethiopian Calendar) with the second Tekle Haymanot, who anointed and crowned Yekuno Amlak; he was the son of Yekuno Amlaks aunt or maternal uncle from his mothers side of the royal family, and later he was the abbot of Debre Libanos. Because he was ordained a priest according to the law and later became a monk and then an Abun, unlearned people thought it inappropriate; they called the Echegenet of the wise an abo bilhat (father of wisdom). Dagmawi (second), meaning in the 7th (century) this new name of being called Tekle Haymanot was given to the righteous, holy, and great apostle, like Jacob who was named by the Lords word; not to the Lasta king named Mera Tekle Haymanot, who took the kingdom from Dilnead in the 10th (century) and was the first to reign from the Zagwe dynasty. The time between the righteous one and the Echege is no less than 550 years (History and Acts). See ጳጳስ/ Pope.
