~ / Se ~

/ Se: The 15th letter in the Geez alphabet, in the order of አልፍ (Alef) and አበገደ (Abegede) its name is ሠውት (Sewit), its numerical value is sixty; when it is a number (60), it is called sixty or thirty; see ሠለሰን (Selesen three times ten) and ሰደሰን (Sedesen six times ten). But scribes call its name ንጉሥ (Nigus king) because it is the letter with which ነግሠ (negse he reigned) is written. In Arabic and Hebrew, one of the guttural letters, (Se), due to the dot, is called ሲን (Sin) or ሺን (Shin) and in ancient Geez, this ሠውት (Sewit), which was called ሰና (Sena) or (She), is (Se) and not ሳቱ (Satu Se the s of sat). But ሳቱ (Satu Se), like the s of ሳምኬት (Samket Samekh), is distinct in name and form, and its order and number do not change, its value of sixty does not leave it, it remains only (Se) and is not called ሠውት ሠሸ (Sewit Seshe) like the (Se) of ሠውት (Sewit) it did not have that name. Two types of s exist in Geez, Syriac, and Hebrew, but not in Arabic; but ጻዴ (Tsade) is called ሳድ (Sad) and is pronounced like (Se) except for the form, (Se), (Tse), and (Se) have no difference in sound. Also, (She) is found in Coptic but not in Greek; and when the Greek books of Salamas were translated from Greek to Geez, it was taken out at that time, and since then its writing and pronunciation have ceased in Geez words. This should be known: Hebrew, Arabic, and Syriac call it (She), and especially Arabic writes what they call ሺን (Shin) with ሠውት (Sewit), distinguishing it carefully.
