[2] Name of a book of chants; that Saint Yared chanted and composed during the reign of Emperor Gäbrä Mäsqäl. See ድጕዓን (dəgʷəʿan). But when they interpret it with the word በደጎ (bädägo – with goodness), it makes it mean good, very good, showing the size and greatness of the book; for in its length, it is about half the size of the Synaxarium. Secondly, they interpret it as ምእላድ መድበል እስትጉቡእ (məʾəlad mädbäl ʾəstəgubuʾ collection of gathered hymns) meaning it is a composition, a new mixed hymn, gathered and arranged from the Old and New Testaments and from scholars, even from the Acts, Miracles, and Homilies. Thirdly, when they interpret it by letter number, (d) is 4, (g) is 3; ድጓ (dəgʷa) is 7; for it says, “እስመ ኍልቈ ሳብዕthe number seven is perfect (ሃይ: አበ). Seven is a perfect number. If they interpret it separately, (d) shows the fourth of its parts; just as the Gospel is divided into four major parts: John, Teaching, Fasting, and Easter; (gʷa) shows the three: chapters, hymns, and antiphons. Furthermore, it says, And I heard a voice from heaven, from angels; if they give the sevenfold nature only to the melody, (d) shows the fourth of its modes: standing, movement, emerald, writing; for these four are the likeness of the Cherubim. Standing like the walk of a man; movement like the walk of a lion; emerald like the walk of an ox; writing like the walk of an eagle; and they are likened to the four living creatures (ገድለ አብርሀ ወአጽብሐ). (gʷa) shows the trinity of the melody, that the melody is ግእዝና ዕዝል አራራይ/ Gəʾəz, ʾəzl, and ʾararay. Melody is a general name of unity; its name is of trinity. But its symbols are made by later people; they are not Yareds. “ነገ). “ወበመዋዕሊሁ ለዝንቱ ንጉሥ ገላውዴዎስ ተንሥኡ አዛዥ ጌራ ወአዛዥ ራጉኤል ካህናት ማእምራነ ዜማ ወወጠኑ አውፅኦ ምልክት ዘድጓAnd in the days of this King Gelawdewos, there arose ʾAzzaz Géra and ʾAzzaz Raguʾel, priests, experts in melody, and they began to create symbols for the Dəgʷa (ታረ: ነገ) For the remaining mystery and interpretation of the Dəgʷas words, ask the teachers of the Dəgʷa.
